Learn how to read a pocket compass accurately and carry an EDC compass without damaging it. Simple steps for hiking compass basics and keychain carry.

Quick answer

To read a pocket compass, hold it flat and level, let the needle settle, align the orienting arrow with the needle, then read your bearing. Carry it on a keychain or in a pouch where it stays flat and away from magnets.

Why level and still matter more than the compass itself

A compass needle only points reliably when the housing is horizontal and motionless. Tilting the compass or walking while reading it lets the needle drag against its pivot, and you will get a bearing that looks plausible but is wrong. Stop, level the compass, and wait for the needle to settle before trusting the number.

Keep magnets and metal away from the needle

Phones, speakers, magnetic clasps, and even some keychain hardware can pull the needle off north. Before you take a bearing, move those items at least a forearm's length away. This is also why an EDC compass should not share a pocket with magnetic gear.

Carry choices: keychain versus pouch

A keychain compass is always with you, but keys and coins can scratch the crystal and knock the needle. A small pouch or a dedicated pocket protects the compass and keeps it flat. If you clip it to a keyring, check that the attachment point does not press on the housing or the needle.

How to read and carry your pocket compass: step by step

  1. Level the compass: Hold the compass flat in your palm at waist height, away from your body. Check that the housing is horizontal, not tilted toward you. If the needle scrapes or sticks, you are tilting it; re-level before continuing.
  2. Let the needle settle: Wait until the needle stops swinging and points consistently. This can take a few seconds; do not rush it. A needle that never settles usually means nearby metal or movement.
  3. Align the orienting arrow: Rotate the bezel until the orienting arrow sits under the north end of the needle. The direction-of-travel arrow now shows your bearing. Confirm you are using the north end of the needle, not the south end.
  4. Read the bearing: Look at the index line where it meets the bezel and read the number in degrees. Note it before you move. Write the number down or repeat it aloud so you do not misremember it.
  5. Carry it protected: Store the compass in a pouch or a pocket without keys, coins, or magnets. If using a keychain, attach it so the housing is not squeezed. Check the crystal and needle periodically for scratches or sticking.
